Directional Selection on Tree Seedling Traits Driven by Experimental Drought Differs Between Mesic and Dry Populations

چکیده
We evaluated population differences and drought-induced phenotypic selection on four seedling traits of the Australian forest tree Eucalyptus pauciflora using a glasshouse dry-down experiment. compared dry mesic populations tested for directional lamina length (reflecting leaf size), shape, node ontogenetic transition to petiolate loss vegetative juvenility), lignotuber size recovery trait). On average, had smaller broader leaves, greater retention juvenile state larger lignotubers than population, but did not differ in survival. While there was statistical support acting focal one or other between gradient estimates two traits, only trait—lamina length—exhibited pattern consistent with observed being result past adaptation reduce susceptibility acute drought. The suggests that future increases drought risk wild will shift mean toward population. Further, we provide evidence suggesting an early age trade-off damage phenotypes which develop more susceptible death. Such trade-offs could have contributed absence survival, despite marked differentiation traits.

Differences in hydraulic architecture between mesic and xeric Pinus pinaster populations at the seedling stage.
We studied the intraspecific variability of maritime pine in a set of morphological and physiological traits: soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance, intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUE, estimated by carbon isotope composition, δ(13)C), root morphology, xylem anatomy, growth and carbon allocation patterns. The data were collected from Pinus pinaster Aiton seedlings (25 half-sib families from five p...
متن کاملIdentification of Drought Tolerant Wheat Genotypes Based on Seedling Traits
Drought significantly reduces yield of many crop plants including wheat in the world. Identification of wheat genotypes that can thrive on limited water is vital to boost the wheat production of rainfed areas. Forty wheat genotypes were screened for drought tolerance using 0, 7.5, 15 and 22.5% Polyethylene Ethylene Glycol 6000 solutions at PMAS Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan ...
متن کاملEffect of Drought Stress Levels on Seedling Morpho-physiological Traits of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Populations grown in Glasshouse
In order to study the effect of drought stress on seedling morpho-physiological traits of alfalfa (Medicago sativa), the seeds of ten populations were collected in their natural habitats from different parts of the Fars province, Iran in 2013. A factorial experiment was conducted using 10 alfalfa populations and four water stress treatments of 100, 75, 50, and 25% Field Capacity (FC) b...
متن کاملLeaf thermotolerance in dry tropical forest tree species: relationships with leaf traits and effects of drought
Understanding how tropical trees will respond to extreme temperatures and drought is essential to predict how future increases in the severity, frequency and duration of extreme climatic events will affect tropical systems. In this study, we investigated leaf thermotolerance by quantifying the temperatures that resulted in a 50 % decrease in photosystem II function (T50) in experimentally grown...
متن کاملDirectional selection and variation in finite populations.
Predictions are made of the equilibrium genetic variances and responses in a metric trait under the joint effects of directional selection, mutation and linkage in a finite population. The "infinitesimal model" is analyzed as the limiting case of many mutants of very small effect, otherwise Monte Carlo simulation is used. If the effects of mutant genes on the trait are symmetrically distributed...
